I was hiking up a little hill this afternoon, even thinking, “I bet I see some deer when I get up over that saddle,” when all of a sudden a dog came out of nowhere. It whizzed right past me and started barking at … this deer, who was fortunately on the other side of an arroyo, in an area too steep for the dog (or me) to negotiate. I didn’t try to take a photo of the deer right away but hiked up a little further. I must say, he looked pretty rattled.

Meanwhile I’d seen hunters in the parking lot with their binoculars and figured they were looking for deer. Besides thinking it might be wise to wear a reflective orange vest when I hike the next few months, I tried to tell the deer there were hunters around and that he should be careful. No doubt he understood every word I said. 🙂
