One of the most special wildflowers in all the Sandias, the calypso (aka ladyslipper) orchid is fairly rare. It also grows very close to the ground, and nods downward, so it’s easy to miss. Given a fair amount of snow in the high Sandias little more than a week ago, I was really surprised to happen upon a few of them yesterday. I was also delighted. It’s just amazing to me that something this delicate and beautiful grows wild.
