There’s a place, pretty high up on Tree Spring Trail, where the claret cup cactuses bloom much later than they do in the foothills. I wouldn’t necessarily expect them to even be that high up (probably close to 9,000 feet) but there they are, right along with the grape holly you can also see in this photo. In any case, I was standing there this morning, taking a shot of the blossoms when all of a sudden I saw a hummingbird come into the frame. I knew my shutter speed wasn’t even remotely fast enough to capture it, but I had only a couple of seconds so I did my best. I love the way the bird is almost exactly the same color as the surrounding holly.
